Standard Annealed Non-Safety Glass:
The "basic" glasses are commonly referred to as Annealed glass. Annealing is the controlled cooling of the glass during the manufacturing process. Annealed glass can be easily cut, polished and drilled. It will break on impact into large jagged pieces.

 

Bendheim manufactures Tempered Safety Glass:
Standard annealed glass can be heat treated in a sophisticated furnace to produce tempered safety glass. The glass is first cut to size and transferred to the furnace where it is heated to a precise softening point, then quickly air cooled. The process creates a glass approximately four times stronger than standard annealed glass. When broken, tempered safety glass shatters into many small fragments thereby greatly reducing the likelihood of major injury. It is used when safety, strength and thermal resistance are important considerations.

 

Bendheim manufactures Laminated Safety Glass:
Laminated glass is a combination of two or more glass sheets with one or more interlayers of plastic (PVB) or resin. In case of breakage, the interlayer holds the fragments together and continues to provide resistance to the passage of persons or objects. Laminated safety glass offers superior safety, security and sound transmission control.

 

Polished Edges:
Polished glass edges exhibit a smooth, glossy finish, and are recommended for exposed edge applications, such as glass shelves. Most Bendheim decorative glasses, 3/4" thick or greater, can be supplied with one or more polished edges, per your order.

 

Rounded Corners:
The four standard square glass corners are replaced with rounded dime-shaped corners to accommodate cabinet door openings requiring rounded-corner inserts. Examine your cabinet door carefully to determine your requirement. Dime-shape (small) corners cost slightly extra and must be specified at time of order. Larger rounded corners or other shapes may require templates, and are quoted on a per project basis. Note: Rounded corners are not offered with polished edges.

Measuring for Cabinet Glass

Please follow the measuring guidelines outlined below to ensure your cabinet glass inserts fit correctly. These measurements are also required to make a request for price quotation. Note: please allow for a + / - 1/16" cutting tolerance.

 

For standard square and rectangular cabinet openings:

• Determine the rough opening size in the cabinet door. This is the opening the glass insert will fit into.
• From the back side of your cabinet door, carefully measure the width of the rough opening where the glass insert will be placed.
• Round down this measurement to the nearest sixteenth of an inch. For example...change 12 11/32" to 12 5/16".
• Now measure the height of the rough opening in the cabinet door.
• As before, round down this measurement to the nearest sixteenth of an inch.
• Lastly, deduct an additional 1/8" from the width and from the height measurements of the rough opening in your cabinet door. For example, if the rough opening measures 14" x 24" - you would order a glass insert that is 13 7/8" x 23 7/8".

Important Note: We supply all glass inserts with square corners unless otherwise instructed. Some cabinet door inserts may require rounded corners. Examine your cabinet door opening carefully to determine your requirement. Small "dime shape" corners cost slightly extra and must be specified at time of order. Larger rounded corners will require templates and are quoted on a per project basis.

 

For arch top and special shape cabinet openings:

• You will need to create a template.
• Suggested tools and materials are: Design Vellum (drafter's tracing paper), a straight edge, scissors or razor knife, painter's tape or masking tape and a sharp pencil.
• Lay the door face down on a flat, even surface. Cover the back of the door with the Design Vellum and secure with painter's tape or masking tape in order to prevent the paper from moving during tracing.
• Carefully rub the side of the pencil against all edges of the opening being sure to get accurate impressions of the corners and any curve(s).
• Remove the paper from the door and connect the corners using your straight edge and pencil. Write within the template border lines - "top" and "bottom" and "front" and "back".
• Cut out the template and place in the opening(s) to ensure accuracy. If more than one door is required, try the template in every door to make sure it works for all.

Special Note For Laminated Glass:

• A fine, clear tape line +/- 1/4" from the edge of the glass may be visible on close inspection.
